A recent study out of Stanford explored whether doctors would revise their medical decisions in light of new AI-generated information, finding that docs are more than willing to change their minds despite being just as vulnerable to cognitive biases as the rest of us.
Here’s the set up published in Nature Communications Medicine:
- 50 physicians were randomized to watch a short video of either a white male or black female patient describing their chest pain with an identical script.
- The physicians made triage, diagnosis, and treatment decisions using any non-AI resource.
- The physicians were then given access to GPT-4 (which they were told was an AI system that had not yet been validated) and allowed to change their decisions.
The initial scores left plenty of room for improvement.
- The docs achieved just 47% accuracy in the white male patient group.
- The docs achieved a slightly better 63% accuracy in the black female patient group.
The physicians were surprisingly willing to change their minds based on the AI advice.
- Accuracy scores with AI improved from 47% to 65% in the white male group.
- Accuracy scores with AI improved from 63% to 80% in the black female group.
Not only were the physicians open to modifying their decisions with AI input, but doing so made them more accurate without introducing or exacerbating demographic biases.
- Both groups showed nearly identical magnitudes of improvement (18%), suggesting that AI can augment physician decision-making while maintaining equitable care.
- It’s worth noting that the docs used AI as more than a search engine, asking it to bring in new evidence, compare treatments, and even challenge their own beliefs [Table].
The Takeaway
Although having the doctors go first means that AI didn’t save them any time in this study – and actually increased time per patient – it showed that flipping the paradigm from “doctors checking AI’s work” to “AI helping doctors check their own work” has the potential to improve clinical decisions without amplifying biases.

- Chapter Series D: Medicare navigation startup Chapter hauled in $75M of Series D funding to boost its valuation to $1.5B less than five years after being co-founded by former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Reveleer’s payor platform advances value-based care through AI-enabled analytics tools for risk adjustment, quality improvement, and member management – a portfolio that will now be bolstered with Novillus’ “workflow engine” for care gap management.
- Don’t Scale Bias: DiMe released an open-access toolkit to help health systems identify and remove harmful clinical algorithms with race-based biases. The toolkit was co-developed through successful pilots with major health systems in NYC, and includes five clear steps to guide de-implementation, tools to engage leadership teams, and resources to educate and support clinicians & patients. - Agents for Care Management: Innovaccer debuted Copilots and Agents for Care Management, which early results have shown to reduce documentation time by 28% and increase patient engagement by 20%. The new agents automate care manager workflows by initiating patient outreach through SMS and voice calls, sending reminders, and handling scheduling. The Care Management Copilot automates tasks such as documentation, chart summarization, and care plan creation, while the ED Follow-up Agent helps with post-discharge care coordination.
- Force + ECU: Force Therapeutics and ECU Health kicked off a new partnership focused on standardizing the health system’s MSK care pathways, automating PROMs collection, and optimizing patient engagement. Force’s remote care platform automates the collection of patient data to fulfill quality improvement initiatives and reporting compliance in orthopedic service lines, while also helping optimize at-home recoveries with virtual physical therapy, joint classes, and ongoing monitoring.
- The Oshi Guarantee: Oshi Health announced an ambitious ROI guarantee that puts 100% of its fees at risk, a model that it hopes will set a new standard for virtual GI care by tying Oshi’s compensation to the metrics that truly matter: sustained symptom control for patients and lower costs for employers & payors. Oshi talked a big game when it laid out why it became the first virtual gastrointestinal center of excellence in the U.S. during its Series C raise, and this move shows that it’s clearly willing to put its fees where its mouth is.
- Apple Watch vs. CART-I: Korean health tech startup Sky Labs published results suggesting that its CART-I wearable has significantly higher AFib detection sensitivity than the Apple Watch. Researchers assessed each device’s AFib algorithms using single-lead ECG data, finding that the CART-I achieved 84.6% sensitivity (vs. 69.1% from the Apple Watch), not a half bad improvement given the recent influx of complaints about the Apple Watch’s AFib false positives.
- Oaklawn Teams Up With Kyruus: Michigan-based Oaklawn is teaming up with Kyruus Health to overhaul its patient experience. The Kyruus platform will connect information across the Oaklawn ecosystem, equipping patients with a user-friendly online search experience to quickly find the right provider based on their specific needs, as well as a streamlined appointment booking process to reduce call volume and administrative burden on staff.
