“One thing to note: while all these papers claim SoTA [State of the Art], we know academic benchmarks have many limitations. The benchmark that truly matters is your use case and how the model works on your data.”

Augmedix just reported Q1 results that managed to axe its share price in half, an interesting turn of events given the company’s role as the bellwether for the white hot ambient AI space.
There’s plenty to unpack when the only publicly-traded medical scribe company takes a hit like that despite beating expectations for both EPS and revenue, which jumped 40% to $13.5M.
The simple explanation? Competition. Augmedix saw “a slow-down in purchasing commitments” as providers evaluate competing offerings, prompting it to cut its full-year revenue forecast to between $52M and $55M (down from $60M to $62M).
- During the investor call, Augmedix said that 42 companies currently offer GenAI medical documentation solutions, leading to a ton of noise and just as many pilots.
- Although the increased demand from health systems is promising for the overall sector, it doesn’t exactly translate to success for established players when nimble startups like Nabla, Abridge, and Suki start swarming in on the action.
Augmedix is shaping its strategy around a product portfolio that lets providers choose the right tool for their needs, expanding beyond Augmedix Live (human scribes, high cost) with Augmedix Go (GenAI scribe, low cost) and Augmedix Go Assist (GenAI + human review, medium cost).
- The push into GenAI has apparently been a double-edged sword. Augmedix reported that strong uptake for its new AI products might result in slower revenue growth as customers transition away from its high-margin Live solution.
- New products tailored to specific settings will be another focus, as seen with the recent debut of Augmedix Go ED following a pilot-turned-implementation at HCA Healthcare. As scribing tech becomes commoditized, expect to see more players differentiate on setting / specialty.
The Takeaway
If there’s one lesson to learn from Augmedix’s first quarter, it’s that business is booming in the ambient AI space, but that doesn’t benefit incumbent leaders when it also attracts hungry competitors looking to feast on the same momentum.

- MEDITECH + ELLKAY: MEDITECH announced that ELLKAY will be the integration partner supplying interface services for MEDITECH-as-a-Service, a cloud-hosted version of the full Expanse platform that streamlines EHR deployment. ELLKAY and MEDITECH share both an affinity for capital letters and a solid track record of collaborating on various projects, which helped steer MEDITECH toward leveraging ELLKAY’s LKOpera Interoperability Platform to deliver scalable solutions for its customers.
- United Nears Amedisys Divestment: A report from The Capitol Forum broke the news that UnitedHealth Group is closing in on a sizable divestment package to part ways with Amedisys – or at least a good chunk of it. Although it’s been less than a year since United beat out several competitors in the race to acquire the home health giant, antitrust lawsuits have prompted United to look into cutting even well-performing assets. The report states that United has plans to divest more than 100 home care centers to a private equity-backed acquirer.
- Incentives = Outcomes: A new study in Health Affairs showed that financial incentives work wonders on patients, especially if you’re asking for a one-time action instead of long term behavior change. After West Virginia began offering a $100 bond to young adults for getting the COVID vaccine, the state saw a nearly 12% increase in vaccinations among 16 to 35-year-olds. The increase was larger among the unemployed and those making under $35, as well as people who had never had a prior COVID infection versus those who had already gotten sick.
- Notable’s Sturdy Partnership: Massachusetts-based Sturdy Health is implementing Notable’s healthcare operations platform to empower its patients to independently navigate appointment scheduling, demographic and coverage verification, and pre-registration form completion. Notable facilitates quite a few processes along the patient experience pathway, including automatic outreach for upcoming appointments / scheduling, personalized experiences through bi-directional integration with Oracle Health, and conversational AI to open self-serve channels.
- Top Medical GenAI Models: AI expert Woojin Kim, MD, turned to LinkedIn to share a great overview of Google’s just-revealed Med-Gemini as well as other leading LLMs/foundation models. Dr. Kim is bullish on the disruption potential of GenAI in healthcare and shared some recent research papers highlighting their potential, focusing not only on Med-Gemini, but also on RayDINO from Meta, Rad-DINO from Microsoft, and MedVersa.
- athenahealth Rolls Out Specialty Solutions: athenahealth rolled out a pair of new specialty-focused solutions to its athenaOne platform, which now includes products tailored specifically for women’s health and urgent care. Practices that adopt athenaOne specialty solutions will have access not only to athenahealth’s comprehensive practice management platform, but also to new tools geared toward addressing their unique needs (pre-configured workflows, targeted clinical content, dedicated onboarding and customer success managers).
- ‘Massive Increase in Brain Scans’: Will the proliferation of portable MRI scanners lead to a “massive increase in brain scans,” while ironically creating new headaches for providers in the process? In a new opinion essay in STAT, a trio of Harvard authors with backgrounds in neurology and psychiatry speculate on how easier access to portable neuro MRI in locations like homes could create the need for a new “neuroimaging counseling” field to help consumers interpret what could become regular brain-health “check-ups.” We’ll believe it when we see it.
- Komodo Expands MapEnhance: Komodo Health announced a series of updates to its MapEnhance offering, including an expanded library of speciality datasets to provide new insights into social determinants of health, real-world oncology data, and rare disease genomics. The updates allow health and life sciences teams to bring together multiple datasets within a single solution – ranging from labs and genomics to EHRs and patient health coverage info – then link them with Komodo’s Healthcare Map to advance longitudinal research using the de-identified patient insights.
- Cost of Caring: The AHA’s new Costs of Caring report highlights how health systems continue to struggle through the financial pressures of providing care at a cost that often outstrips reimbursement. The report found that hospital labor costs – which account for ~60% of hospital budgets – increased by over $42.5B between 2021 and 2023. The inflating costs were magnified by consistently poor reimbursement across key services, including behavioral health (-34% below costs) and outpatient wound care (-43%). Rampant cybersecurity attacks were another honorable mention.
- Story Health & Saint Luke’s AFib Program: Story Health and the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute launched a new AFib partnership, integrating Saint Luke’s expert clinicians with Story Health’s virtual care platform and health coaches. The new program leverages Story Health for engaging patients in between clinic visits, including symptom management, ECG monitoring, treatment optimization, and continuous patient support. Story Health previously focused on heart failure care, and the Saint Luke’s partnership begins a wider rollout of its new AFib program in the coming months.
- KeyCare Signs Wisconsin Health Plan: KeyCare is partnering with Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin to provide 24×7 urgent care in all 50 states via virtual visits through GHC-SCW’s MyChart patient portal. GHC-SCW is a health plan covering over 75k members, who all now have access to virtual urgent care with licensed providers and will soon have the option for asynchronous visits starting later this month.
