“ChatGPT today is a better diagnostician than most doctors in the world, yet people still go to doctors… Maybe I’m a dinosaur here, but I really do not want to entrust my medical fate to ChatGPT with no human doctor in the loop.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

In today’s special edition of The Digital Health Wire Show, we caught up with Slice of Healthcare founder Jared Taylor for a look behind the scenes at one of the best podcasts in the industry. Jared shares his secret sauce for running a B2B media company, tips for getting your news covered, and a recap of the record-setting 2025 Top Leaders in Digital Health Awards.

OpenAI Delivers Largest-Ever Study of Clinical AI

Hot on the heels of launching its HealthBench medical AI benchmark, OpenAI just delivered results from the largest-ever study of clinical AI in actual practice – and let’s just say the future’s looking bright.

40,000 visits, 106 clinicians, 15 clinics. OpenAI went big to get real-world data, equipping Kenya-based primary and urgent care provider Penda Health with AI Consult (GPT4o) clinical decision support within its EHR.

  • The study split 106 Penda clinicians into two even groups (half with AI Consult, half without), then tracked outcomes over a three month period.

When AI Consult detected a potential error in history, diagnosis, or treatment, it triggered a simple Traffic Light alert.

  • Green – No concerns, no action needed
  • Yellow – Moderate concerns, optional clinician review
  • Red – Safety-critical concerns, mandatory clinician review

The results were definitely promising. Clinicians using AI Consult saw a:

  • 16% reduction in diagnostic errors
  • 13% reduction in treatment errors
  • 32% reduction history-taking errors

The “training effect” is real. The AI Consult group got significantly better at avoiding common mistakes over time, triggering fewer alerts as the study progressed.

  • Part of that is because Penda took several steps to help along the way, including one-on-one training, peer champions, and performance feedback.
  • It’s also worth noting that there was no recorded harm as a result of AI Consult suggestions, and 100% of the clinicians using it said that it improved their quality of care.

What’s the catch? While AI Consult led to a clear reduction in clinical errors, there was no statistically significant difference in patient-reported outcomes, and clinicians using the copilot saw slightly longer visit times.

The Takeaway

Clinical AI continues to prove itself outside of multiple choice licensing exams / clinical vignettes, and OpenAI just gave us our best evidence yet that general-purpose models can reduce errors in actual patient care.

  • Charta Series A: Charta Health hauled in $22M of Series A funding to give manual chart reviews an AI-powered makeover. Core features of Charta’s platform include AI documentation review to surface gaps before they become denials, proactive alerts to flag missed diagnoses, and client-specific compliance customization. Put it all together and Charta reportedly generates a 72% improvement in accuracy over internal teams and up to a 15.2% RVU improvement per chart.
  • Sword ROI Pledge: Sword never fails to walk the talk, and just announced a new $1M ROI Pledge that underscores just how much confidence it has in its virtual MSK platform. The pledge promises new clients who launch one of Sword’s MSK solutions with outcome-based pricing a guaranteed return during their first year, or they get $1M, no questions asked. Hats off to Sword for what might be the best “not marketing” marketing campaign we’ve seen all year.
  • Clinicians Embrace AI: Elsevier’s 2025 Clinician of the Future report confirmed that AI utilization is booming, with the share of clinicians leveraging AI at work doubling to 48% over the last year. The survey of over 2k clinicians across 109 countries found that nearly all AI-users (97%) reported using general-purpose models such as ChatGPT, compared to just 76% using specialized AI solutions. Chinese clinicians topped the charts for AI utilization at 71%, while the U.S. ranked second-to-last at 36%.
  • Regard Debuts Proactive Documentation: Regard took the lid off its new AI-powered Proactive Documentation platform, which combines chart data with patient conversations to surface diagnostic insights and create a draft note prior to the actual encounter. The platform includes integrated scribing functionality, reportedly supports all specialties, and also introduces Max – Regard’s AI agent for real-time clinical assistance that answers questions on patient data and helps summarize encounters.
  • Portal Use Driven By Encouragement: A recent report from the ASTP/ONC highlighted a rise in patients accessing their portals, in large part due to provider encouragement. In 2024, 65% of patients logged into their patient portal or accessed their online medical records, up from just 25% in 2014. The report pins the improvement on helpful nudges: 87% of patients who were encouraged to use the portal by either their provider or health plan reported logging in, compared to just 57% of those that weren’t.
  • Innovaccer Readmissions Management: Innovaccer debuted an AI-powered Readmissions Management solution that offers custom custom dashboards and predictive analytics to prevent avoidable readmissions. The new solution is fine-tuned to help health systems avoid CMS penalties, leveraging Innovaccer’s recent AI investments such as Care Copilot and Pre-Call Coordinator to create 360 degree patient profiles, identify those at high-risk of readmission, and execute interventions at scale.
  • Slingshot Unveils Ash: Slingshot AI is leaning in on generative AI for mental healthcare by bolting on another $50M to its Series A funding round. The latest capital brings the a16z-backed startup’s total funding to $93M as it sets out to build “the world’s first foundation model for psychology” and introduce more patients to its new Ash AI therapy chatbot. Ash was trained on sessions with human therapists to allow it to adapt its style based on user responses, and is now available on the app store to offer personalized support to anyone with a phone.
  • Telehealth Popular in Medicare: New research from MedPAC showed that one third of Medicare beneficiaries used telehealth in 2024, a decent jump from 25% the year prior. Although the survey didn’t hammer down a specific driver, 90% of telehealth users were satisfied with their visits and said they’d recommend the service to others. A growing share of Medicare beneficiaries (44%) are now interested in having a telehealth option (vs. 61% of people aged 50-64 with private coverage), especially those who live in urban areas with household income above $50k.
  • Omega Teams Up With Microsoft: RCM platform Omega Healthcare expanded its partnership with Microsoft to advance its AI capabilities across the revenue cycle. By integrating Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry with the Omega Digital Platform, Omega launched an eye-pooping 20+ new GenAI and agentic solutions to automate complex workflows, including correspondence processing, appeal filing, denial management, and call center support.
  • Hippocratic + Sheba Medical Center: Hippocratic AI is rolling out its AI agents at Sheba Medical Center to enhance the patient journey from beginning to end. The Israeli academic hospital will leverage Hippocratic to support “non-diagnostic, patient-facing roles” starting with triage and intake, although it sounds like more expansion is on the docket for later this year.
