The power trio of Mayo Clinic, Epic, and Abridge are joining forces to bring the magic of generative AI to the “scaffolding of the healthcare system” – nurses.
The new solution will work similar to Abridge’s core ambient documentation tools for physicians, but optimized specifically for the unique complexity of nursing workflows.
- Whereas physician conversations usually involve capturing the medical history and patient’s story, nurses are also performing and documenting tasks like vitals collection or turning patients to avoid bed sores.
- This data all ends up in different places within the EHR, and requires a new user experience to work backwards from.
Mayo Clinic nurses are at the center of the collaboration.
- The development team is engaging with them directly to ensure the new solution meets the needs of all nursing and patient care workflows along with regulatory requirements for ambient solutions.
- Nurses will also help prioritize the workflows where the tool will have the highest impact, and will be “instrumental” in designing and testing the overall solution.
Epic’s involvement will allow the tool to integrate seamlessly into its EHR and inpatient nursing workflows, another sign that the company is all-in on quickly advancing its GenAI roadmap.
- It also represents one of the most significant efforts to stem from the Epic Workshop program announced last year, which features third-party vendors co-developing technology with Epic.
The combination of Abridge’s AI stack, Epic’s development, and Mayo Clinic’s nursing expertise should help accelerate the development cycle, and the health system is looking to get the tool in the hands of nurses before the end of the year.

Nurses perform a massive breadth of activities in fast-paced environments, and they’re grappling with the same documentation-driven burnout as the rest of the industry. Toggling between patient duties, documentation, and staff communication is a demanding use case for ambient AI, but this team appears to have all the pieces it needs to make it happen.

- UBI Doesn’t Improve Health: New research suggests that universal basic income might not improve population health to the degree that many would assume. After 1k low-income U.S. adults received $1,000 per month for three years (2k controls received $50/mo), the UBI group saw large but short-lived improvements in stress and food security, as well as greater use of hospital and ED care. What they didn’t see was an improvement in overall health, supporting previous studies suggesting that financial incentives are better at creating one-off actions than long-term change.
- Linus Acquires Together Senior Health: Cognitive impairment detection company Linus Health announced the acquisition of Together Senior Health, the creator of the Moving Together virtual therapeutic program that combines movement, mindful body awareness, music, and social interaction tailored to how people with cognitive decline learn and engage. For those attending the upcoming AAIC Alzheimer’s conference, Linus will be presenting research on the use of AI in digital cognitive assessment tools and their integration into primary care settings.
- Q2 Financial Foreshadowing: UnitedHealth and Elevance recently kicked off earnings season, and both payors foreshadowed a bumpy road ahead for their government businesses. United warned investors that CMS plans to cut down on Medicare Advantage overpayments could negatively impact finances going forward, but an $8B operating income for the quarter still sent shares soaring. Elevance reported that Medicaid disenrollments have caused the remaining beneficiaries to skew sicker, and that rates aren’t keeping up with the higher-than-expected utilization.
- Digital Twin Potential: Unlearn’s new paper in Clinical and Translational Science outlines the current reality of AI-powered digital twins and the steps needed to actualize the tech’s potential in clinical practice. The paper details existing use cases for digital twins like optimizing clinical trials and enabling highly powered trials with smaller control groups, while also addressing the challenges of adopting digital twins in healthcare, namely validation and regulatory hurdles.
- Kamala On Healthcare: In the wake of President Biden calling off his campaign, STAT put out a great overview of how his healthcare platform differs from VP Kamala Harris, who now has the endorsement of enough party delegates to become the Democratic nominee. While the two share many similar views, Kamala stands left of the president on healthcare, particularly reproductive rights. Kamala has also positioned herself as tougher on the industry by endorsing Medicare for All and calling for more aggressive policies to control drug costs.
- Informatics Survey: Phillips’ latest Future Health Index report showed that nine out of 10 healthcare execs see the potential of automation to support staff and reduce administrative tasks, but two-thirds believe that medical professionals are worried about inadequate AI and losing their skills due to tech overreliance. Nearly all of the 3k respondents said their organizations face data integration challenges that hamper their ability to provide high-quality care, most often citing the time required to look up results, limited coordination among providers, repeat tests, and risk of errors.
- DiMe Adds Parkinson’s Tools: DiMe expanded its digital health measurement product library to include Parkinson’s disease through a partnership with the Michael J Fox Foundation and Critical Path Institute. The expansion includes 94 additional digital solutions that support PD research and care, which are often difficult to design given the diverse and fluctuating symptoms of the disease. The updated library supports clinicians, researchers, and developers with validated tools and streamlined evidence to accelerate the path toward improved outcomes.
- Medicare Beneficiaries Under 65: Although Medicare is usually thought of as a program for seniors, it also covers younger patients with disabilities, as well as those with conditions like kidney failure or ALS. MedPAC’s latest breakdown of Medicare demographics showed that people under the age of 65 now represent 1 in 8 beneficiaries, and unsurprisingly require a disproportionate amount of care. These younger beneficiaries accounted for 17.4% of Medicare spending in 2021.
- Intermountain + Neuroflow: Intermountain is partnering with mental health provider Neuroflow to identify and triage behavioral health risk within its primary care population and improve the efficiency of its integrated care programs. Co-occurring physical and behavioral conditions typically lead to higher medical costs, and Neuroflow’s Integrated Care solution will help get out in front of these costs in Colorado while serving the high concentration of patients likely to benefit from the tech.
- AFib Smart Ring: AFib detection has become a primary health feature in smart watches, and it’s apparently making its way to smart rings. Wearable maker Ultrahuman announced that its Ring Air device has added AFib detection through a monthly subscription. The new AFib detection feature is powered by FibriCheck’s PPG technology (FDA and CE approved), which measures heart rhythm by applying a light source to the skin and then uses AI to measure changes in blood volume and detect arrhythmias.
